“How Harvey found me I don’t know, but he was sometimes in my audience at gigs around Manchester and loved ‘Margarita’.
So much so in fact, that he got me a record deal with Polydor in 1980 for a single of the song plus a live LP. The single was getting radio play, particularly on one essential programme on BBC. The story I heard from a producer was that the beloved presenter when told that a joke he had made about the song was inappropriate, listened to the lyric, then refused to play it anymore because it was too sad for his morning show. It was the kiss of doom for the single’s chances. However, Harvey still came to gigs, and I’m grateful for the opportunity he gave me to try one more time. Every year he gives me a call.”
