Peter Cowap was the quintessential musician’s musician. We were close throughout the 1960’s and into the 70’s with his involvement with Graham Gouldman, The Country Gentlemen and Little Frankie.
At the beginning of the 1970’s he struck out on his own and I agreed to be his manager securing him a deal with Pye.
He put out 3 singles; none charted but all brim with 1970’s flavour:
- “Crickets” (with B-side “Wicked Melinda“) in August 1970,
- “The Man With The Golden Gun” / “Tampa Florida” in March 1971,
- “Safari” – see clip below; with B-side “Oh Solomon” in June 1971.
I drafted Peter Cowap to front Herman’s Hermits after Peter Noone left the band and in August 1971 the Hermits released “She’s A Lady“.
Sadly Pete passed away in 1997 at the age of 53.
He was an amazing musician and quite a legend in Manchester where they have held the Peter Cowap Music Festival for many years now.
